Where is Your Heart?

Where is Your Heart?

This is a repost of an earlier blog.

For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.  Matthew 6:21

You have probably heard it said, “Show me where a person spends their money, and I will show you what is important to them.” There is much truth in that saying, but there are at least two other tests that are equally valid for determining what is really important to us: where we spend our time and what we think about. Jesus alluded to this when He said, “Where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.”

One’s attitude toward wealth is a barometer of righteousness. What do you spend your money on? Is it something you really need? Jesus isn’t against owning things, making money, or going to the movies once in a while, but He does want us to hold our earthly treasures with a loose grip. In verses 19 & 20, Jesus exhorts us to store up for ourselves treasures in heaven rather than treasures on earth. What do your spending habits tell you about what is important to you?

Not all treasures are material. How we spend our time also reveals what is important to us. After work, school, and family, how much time is devoted to the Lord and His service? How much time do you spend in prayer or studying God’s word each week?

Finally, what do you think about? What preoccupies your mind most often? The NBA? NFL? SAT’s? SEX? How much is God on your mind? Psalm 145:5 “On the glorious splendor of Your majesty And on Your wonderful works, I will meditate.” What we spend our money, time, and thoughts on tells us a lot about the state of our heart. What is the condition or yours?

Prayer: Lord God, thank you for all you have done for me and given to me. I commit all I am and all I have to you and your service. Help me to store up treasures in Heaven and to expand your Kingdom here on Earth. In Jesus Name, Amen.
